I've been re-branding just about everything within my business for the past few months now. The most important thing next to my actual website is my blog presence. Whether you own your own business or not, creating a space where you can share your voice and/or opinions on things really creates a sense of self. I tend to use the analogy of "You Are The Interior Designer" of your online space.
Many people love to see attractive things. From people to fancy gadgets. Your blog design is no different and it can either make or break your community activity. Here are 5 things you can do to create the perfect blog design space.
1. COOL THEME
It's always nice to brainstorm a central "thing" for your overall blog design. When I say "thing", I'm referring to a theme your blog gives. Some blogs use tropical colors and mimosas to give off a laid back, come relax feel while others may give off straight urban, New Yawker vibes. Your theme should be something that speaks to you and your personality/business. It also helps to create a mood-board to help get your blog design squared away.
2. EPIC ABOUT PAGE
Hey! Get to know me! Personally, I know I always want to know about the author of the blogs I read. The about page is your chance to really let your personality shine. If you're a silly-something, share a joke... if you're a cat lady who loves pens and leaves, share that! It's what makes you unique and connects you with your audience. A few things to include:
- Your Name ...(Not Your WHOLE name + SSN, sheesh)
- Who You Are + Why You Blog
- Fun Facts ... (Optimus Prime is my imaginary husband. No seriously...)
You know, things like that. Be creative and have fun!
3. WE LOVE WIDTH
Photos and creative angles make the world go 'round. There is something about a photo that's wide that seems to make all the difference between clean and clutter. In the beginning as a newbie blogger, you don't too much care for this but learn the full width of photos allowed within your template and start making all your post images that width. If you're a horizontal or vertical lover, doesn't matter... they all look great!
4. WHITE SPACE
This is the Shanghai of clean. White space gives off a great "openness" feel. Makes for a pretty great welcoming refreshment too! We all LOVE a clean space... unless you're a serial hoarder, of course! Other than that, you don't have to be a designer to achieve perfect white space. If you feel your blog is cluttered or a bit claustrophobic, then maybe it's time to roll out the white carpet.
5. LESS IS MORE
I couldn't stress this enough. Ads.... ads... and more ads. STOP! If you plan to offer ad space and such on your blog, keep it simple. Readers tend to get overwhelmed and quite distracted by the gazillion ways you're showing to make your coins online. Keep your ads limited to a certain small number. You can even rotate them to keep things organized. Most importantly, make sure they are relevant to your blog content.
The lesser ads you display, the neater your blog design will look.
WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU THINK WILL HELP YOUR BLOG DESIGN TO BE MORE ATTRACTIVE?
